Australia is dealing with the arrival of a strain of bird flu that it had managed to keep out for years. Since H5 avian influenza was first detected in wild seabirds in Western Australia in June 2026, the virus has been found in wild birds across several states, and the country recorded its first mass bird death event linked to the strain in early August. For poultry keepers, wildlife teams and government agencies, one of the hardest parts of any outbreak is the same: how to deal safely with large numbers of infected and dead birds.

 

This article looks at what bird flu is, how the current situation in Australia has developed, and why the safe disposal of infected material is such an important part of controlling the spread.

 

What is bird flu (avian influenza)?

Bird flu, or avian influenza, is a viral infection that spreads among birds and can sometimes pass to mammals and people. It is caused by influenza A viruses, which are sorted into strains such as H5, H7 and H9. The most serious form is known as high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI), which spreads rapidly and can kill an entire flock within days.

The strain behind the current global spread is H5, part of the H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b lineage that has moved through wild bird populations on almost every continent. The virus spreads through direct contact between birds and through contaminated droppings, water, feed, equipment and clothing. Because it can move so easily, avian influenza is a nationally notifiable disease in Australia, which means any suspected case must be reported to the authorities.

 

The bird flu situation in Australia

Australia stayed free of the global H5 strain longer than most regions, partly because of its distance from major migratory flyways. That changed in June 2026, when H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza was detected in wild seabirds in Western Australia. Since then, the virus has been found in wild birds in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.

On 3 August 2026, the Australian Government confirmed the country’s first mass mortality event linked to H5, after 49 dead and 35 sick greater crested terns were found by aerial surveillance south of Cape Jaffa in South Australia. By the middle of the month, more than 230 H5 detections had been recorded in wild birds, though at that stage there were no cases in commercial poultry.

Australia has faced avian influenza before. In 2024, a series of H7 outbreaks led to around 2.4 million birds being culled across 16 infected properties in Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory. That response was declared a success, with no new H7 detections after July 2024, but it showed how quickly the disease can force large-scale culling and disposal.

 

Why safe disposal matters during an outbreak

When avian influenza is confirmed, infected and culled birds have to be destroyed quickly. Every carcass carries a high viral load, and the way that material is handled often decides whether an outbreak stays contained or spreads to nearby flocks and wildlife.

Moving carcasses off site is one of the biggest risks. Vehicles, crates and people can all carry the virus beyond the affected property, so destroying waste where it is found removes a major route for the disease to travel. How Australia is responding

The response is led by state and territory authorities, working with the Australian Government and wildlife agencies. It combines surveillance of wild birds, movement controls around affected sites, and the careful disposal of infected material to break the chain of infection.
