Hotel groups have set some of the boldest sustainability targets in hospitality. Net zero by a fixed date. Zero waste to landfill. Cuts in single-use plastic and carbon per guest night. The intent is clear. The problem is that waste, and landfill in particular, is often the hardest of those targets to actually move.
A busy hotel produces a lot of waste, and much of it still ends up buried. That single fact quietly undermines a group’s environmental reporting. We look at why landfill is the weak point in so many hotel sustainability plans, and how thermal treatment and waste-to-energy can close the gap. Why landfill is the weak link in hotel sustainability targets
Hotels generate waste at scale and around the clock. Food waste from kitchens and buffets. Packaging from deliveries. Guest room waste, garden waste, and a steady stream of contaminated or non-recyclable material that recycling cannot take.
A large share of that ends up in landfill. And landfill works directly against the targets most groups have signed up to. As buried food and organic waste rot, they release methane. Methane traps far more heat than carbon dioxide over the short term, so every tonne of hotel waste that goes to landfill keeps generating emissions long after the guest has checked out.
There is a reporting problem too. Waste sent to landfill is hard to recover value from and hard to show progress on. A group can cut plastic straws and switch to LED lighting, then watch its landfill line stay stubbornly high.
The problem is sharper for remote and island resorts
For a city hotel, landfill is at least available, even if it is costly. For a resort on an island or in a remote region, it may barely exist.
These sites often have little or no local landfill capacity. Waste has to be shipped or trucked long distances to be disposed of. That adds cost, fuel, and emissions to every load. In some destinations it simply piles up. And that threatens the very environment guests travel to see.

How incineration reduces landfill dependency
Incineration attacks the problem at its root: volume. A modern incinerator burns residual waste at high temperature and cuts its volume. What is left is a small amount of inert ash rather than tonnes of material heading for a landfill cell.
For a hotel group, that changes the numbers in three ways:
- Less waste to bury. Non-recyclable waste that would have gone to landfill is destroyed on or near the site instead.
- Less waste to move. Treating waste where it is produced cuts the haulage of full skips across long distances, and the emissions that come with it.
- No slow methane release. Incineration produces carbon dioxide when it burns. But it avoids the drawn-out methane that buried organic waste gives off for years.
None of this replaces recycling or waste reduction. Those still come first. Incineration is for the residual waste that is genuinely left over, the part that recycling and reuse cannot take. Used that way, it removes the material that would otherwise keep a landfill figure high.
Turning waste into energy on site
The step beyond simple volume reduction is recovering the heat. Waste-to-energy systems capture the heat from burning waste and turn it into hot water, steam, or electricity.
For a resort, that heat has obvious uses. Hot water, laundry, heating, and pool systems all need energy that is often costly to import. Recovering it from waste turns a disposal cost into a partial energy supply. It strengthens the environmental case too. Energy recovered from waste can offset some of the fossil fuel a site would otherwise buy.
How this supports an ESG strategy, not just a waste bill
Reducing landfill dependency is not only an operational win. It maps neatly onto the three pillars a hotel group reports against:
- Environmental. Lower landfill volumes, reduced methane, less haulage, and recovered energy all feed directly into carbon and waste reporting.
- Social. Better on-site waste control means cleaner sites and better sanitation, which matters most in the remote and island destinations where local infrastructure is thin.
- Governance. On-site treatment gives a group direct oversight of its own waste. It produces data you can measure and report, rather than a target that depends on a distant contractor.
That last point is the one groups often miss. A landfill target you cannot measure is hard to defend to investors and guests. On-site treatment puts the numbers back in your own hands.
